5 Tips for Storing an RV

Sep 19, 2022 | RV Storage, RV Tips

Winter is right around the corner, which means it’s time to start thinking about storing your RV! Many RV owners neglect some of the important tasks that should be done before putting their RV into storage, which can lead to costly repairs (not to mention a major headache). With that said, here are a few of our best tips for storing an RV over the fall and winter so that you prevent damage from occurring and set yourself up for when camping season returns in the spring.

1. Priority One: Winterize

Our #1 most critical tip for storing an RV is to have it properly winterized. We can’t emphasize this enough. Winterizing your RV is an inexpensive way to prevent significant repair costs, since it:

  • Protects your water lines,
  • Protects your battery,
  • Takes care of your tires, and
  • Stops rodents and pests.

As you contemplate stowing away your RV for the season, we extend an invitation to take advantage of our convenient services. Whether through our efficient drive-through winterization service, the flexibility of our mobile winterization option, or the empowering knowledge gained from one-on-one sessions with our seasoned RV experts—we’ve got you covered. 2. Guard Against Water Damage: Cover Your Vents

Every year, water damage occurs due to your RV’s vent covers breaking under the weight of snow and ice (or due to deterioration from UV rays).

The solution?

Anyone storing an RV should cover their vents. We suggest installing the economical MaxxAir vent covers. Crafted from impact-resistant plastic, these covers allow for essential airflow into your trailer without compromising on protection against water leaks.

3. Do NOT Use Tarps

Many RV owners are unaware that tarps do not breathe and create condensation on the areas you are trying to keep dry. Unfortunately, the freeze-thaw cycles in Alberta make the situation worse, leading to water damage (even when large snow packs are eliminated).

To address this issue, we recommend using a 4-season RV cover that allows for air flow without trapping moisture. Alternatively, you could avoid using a cover all together if your seams and seals are properly protected, since your roof is designed to withstand Canadian winters. Our sealant of choice this is the Dicor lap sealant.

4. Combatting Winter Wear and Tear: Lubricate Key Areas

Canadian winters can be extremely hard on your RV since the vehicle is sitting idle for 6-8 months of the year. (Picture old men sitting too long and then struggling to get up off of the couch!)

When you are storing an RV over the winter, our advice is to save yourself some time by scheduling a service appointment with our RV experts to have them lubricate the key areas. If you would like to do this task yourself, you should follow these lubrication points:

  • Slide Seals
  • Trailer Hitch
  • Slide Gears
  • Axle Springs
  • Compartment Locks
  • Awning Spring

5. The Unwanted Guests: Mouse Proof Your RV

RV damage from unwelcome intruders such as mice is something you don’t want to experience. That is why another one of our tips for storing an RV is that you mouse proof!

Be sure to plug all holes in the RV’s underbelly (contact us if you would like us to perform this service!) and remove any indication of food.

For an additional layer of protection, we recommend using these products:

  1. Kick the Bucket Mouse Trap Kit
  2. Store it Safe Kit

6. A Seasonal Serenity: Ensuring Peace of Mind

Feel at ease all fall and winter. If you take the appropriate actions to prepare your RV for the colder months, you will save yourself from running into catastrophic issues when you are ready to bring your RV out in the spring.
